Thank you so much for looking!
I’m Jennifer de Graaf, a LEED accredited (LEED AP), Bay Friendly Qualified Professional (BFQP) and licensed Landscape Architect (PLA) with a penchant for gardening and garden design.
I enjoy designing projects that are carefully individualized to each client’s needs, site, and personal aesthetic. I believe that the client’s personality along with my skills and abilities can combine to create something that becomes more than the sum of its parts. Site planning and planting design must respond to the client, location, climate, quality of light, local vernacular, and also be sensitive to the environment (phew!). A successful project plans for and responds to the effects of time and creates a sense of place that is not only about an artistic statement (the design itself), but of how it will be cared for over time. By collaborating with owners, my design work aims to work with both the site and those who will care for it.
I love designing for all sorts of spaces, my favorite projects have been those designed for specific groups of users and functions such as personal gardens, roof gardens, neighborhood parks, trail systems, and some very interesting institutional work. I believe that any space or site can be special, it just takes a little TLC and planning ahead.
My Landscape Architecture design firm’s website is www.deGraafAssoc.com. I started this blog out of frustration with the status quo in the Landscape Architecture industry. There isn’t enough transparency for clients to become as informed as they want to be, to have the information they need to make decisions, and to feel comfortable with doing so. The information presented here is intended to be transparent, responsive, and communicative.
On that note, here is the ASLA code of professional ethics that I adhere to. I won’t say it is an interesting read, but at least it is available for anyone who wants to know.
I am also writing about portfolio design for Landscape Architects through the Land8 blog, here is the first post with links to the rest.
